Ever wondered why pond water turns brilliant green one day and rusty red or golden brown the next? The secret lies inside microscopic engine rooms called chloroplasts.

While all microalgae rely on green chlorophyll a to power photosynthesis, different species produce specialized pigments to capture light. These pigments work like cellular paint, masking the baseline green and transforming entire bodies of water.

1. Emerald Green: The Chlorophyll Classic

Classic green microalgae (Chlorophyta) load up on chlorophyll a and b—the exact same solar panels terrestrial plants use.

  • The Pigment: Chlorophyll absorbs blue and red wavelengths while reflecting green light (~500–550 nm) back at your eyes.
  • The Vibe: Bright, vibrant, pea-soup green.

2. Golden Brown: Deep-Water Specialists

Diatoms and golden algae often tint water an earthy amber or tea color.

  • The Pigment: An accessory carotenoid called fucoxanthin.
  • The Trick: Fucoxanthin absorbs blue-green light, allowing diatoms to thrive deeper underwater where red light can’t reach. Its rich brown tone completely overpowers the green chlorophyll inside the chloroplast.

3. Crimson Red: Sunscreen & Stress

Red water comes from two very different biological moves:

  • Phycoerythrin: True red microalgae use this protein pigment inside their chloroplasts to absorb green light and reflect red.
  • Astaxanthin (Nature’s Sunscreen): Under extreme sunlight or nutrient stress, green microalgae like Haematococcus pluvialis pump out massive amounts of astaxanthin. This red carotenoid acts as a biological shield, turning the entire cell crimson to protect its delicate machinery.
